Education to Improve the World
Education should prepare students not only to adapt to the world as it is, but also to imagine and help create a better one.
This requires more than academic proficiency. Students need opportunities to develop ethical judgment, civic responsibility, creativity, collaboration, empathy, and the capacity to act. They must learn to examine complex problems, consider multiple perspectives, work across differences, and recognize their own ability to contribute to the common good.
Global Education and Citizenship
In an increasingly interdependent world, education must help students understand how their lives are connected to those of others.
Global education develops the knowledge, skills, values, and dispositions needed to engage constructively across cultures and national boundaries. It helps students understand global challenges, appreciate different perspectives, and recognize their responsibilities as members of local, national, and global communities.
Global citizenship does not replace local or national belonging. It expands the circle of understanding and responsibility.
Democracy and Civic Agency
Democratic societies depend on citizens who can think critically, evaluate evidence, engage respectfully with disagreement, and participate in public life.
Civic education should therefore extend beyond learning how government works. It should cultivate ethical judgment, democratic values, political understanding, and confidence in one’s ability to act with others. Schools and universities are themselves civic institutions whose cultures teach students whether authority is accountable, differences can be discussed constructively, and individuals can influence their communities.
Education and Climate Change
Climate change is already reshaping the conditions of teaching and learning. Extreme heat, disasters, displacement, health risks, damaged infrastructure, and economic disruption are affecting schools and deepening educational inequalities.
Education systems must respond to these immediate effects while also preparing students to understand climate change and contribute to adaptation, mitigation, resilience, and more sustainable ways of living.
Climate education cannot be confined to a single lesson or subject. It has implications for curriculum, pedagogy, teacher preparation, school operations, infrastructure, leadership, and public policy. Effective responses require both scientific understanding and the development of ethical reasoning, systems thinking, civic engagement, and collective agency.
Artificial Intelligence and Education
Artificial intelligence is changing how knowledge is produced, accessed, and used. It is also transforming work, institutions, and the competencies people need.
Education systems must help students develop AI literacy: an understanding of how AI works, the ability to use it effectively, and the judgment to evaluate its limitations and ethical consequences. At the same time, AI may support personalized learning, assessment, teacher development, school leadership, and education governance.
Its value, however, depends on how it is used. AI should serve educational purposes rather than define them. Its adoption must strengthen human agency, protect equity and privacy, respect local knowledge, and preserve the relationships at the heart of teaching and learning.
Educational Change as a Systemic Process
Ambitious ideas do not improve education unless institutions can translate them into practice.
Educational change requires coherence among goals, curriculum, pedagogy, assessment, teacher development, leadership, governance, resources, and organizational culture. Isolated innovations rarely transform systems because each element of education interacts with the others.
Lasting change therefore requires attention to the system as a whole, to the people who work within it, and to the political and cultural conditions that shape what is possible.
Teachers as Professionals and Knowledge Creators
Teachers are not merely implementers of policy or curriculum. They are professionals who interpret complex situations, make ethical and pedagogical judgments, and generate knowledge through practice.
Educational improvement depends on strengthening teachers’ capacity to inquire into their work, collaborate with colleagues, learn from evidence, and adapt instruction to the needs of students and communities. Professional learning should be sustained, collaborative, connected to practice, and supported by school leadership and institutional conditions.
When teachers are treated as capable professionals and knowledge creators, schools become stronger organizations for learning and improvement.
Comparative Education and Policy Learning
Education systems can learn from one another, but policies cannot simply be copied from one context to another.
Comparative study expands the range of possibilities available to educators and policymakers. It reveals how different societies define educational purposes, organize institutions, prepare teachers, and respond to common challenges.
At the same time, policies are shaped by culture, history, politics, resources, and institutional capacity. Meaningful policy learning therefore requires asking not only what appears to work, but why it works, for whom, under what conditions, and how it would need to be adapted elsewhere.
Education, Ethics, and Human Agency
Education is an ethical endeavor because it reflects choices about what knowledge matters, what kind of society is desirable, and what responsibilities people have toward one another.
Evidence and technical expertise can clarify possible courses of action, but they cannot determine educational purposes on their own. Educators and policymakers must also consider questions of justice, dignity, responsibility, freedom, and fairness.
The ultimate aim of education is to expand human agency: the capacity of individuals and communities to understand their circumstances, make informed choices, cooperate with others, and shape their futures.
Connecting Ideas with Practice
These ideas are closely connected. Climate change, artificial intelligence, democratic erosion, inequality, and global interdependence are not separate educational challenges. Together, they are changing what students need to learn and what schools, universities, and education systems must be capable of doing.
Responding to them requires clarity of purpose, disciplined inquiry, ethical judgment, and sustained attention to implementation.
The purpose of these ideas is not only to understand education, but to contribute to its improvement.
